With the advancement in technology, especially in the fields of telecommunication and computer service, the distance between people around the world has indeed been shortened. Technology makes communication across the globe easier, quicker and more reliable. The term “Global Village” well illustrates how close the humans are getting together nowadays, thanks to modern technology.
First, modern technology facilitates communication between faraway places. For example, in the old days, keeping in touch with friends in foreign countries was not easy. It took several weeks and even months for a posted mail to reach its destination. However, with the modern telecommunication technology, we now can make long distance calls, having 0.5 second of voice delay only. Not only does this greatly increase the ease of communication, relationship between relatives and friends and business partnership can also be strengthened.
Second, technological advancement allows faster transmission of information. After the introduction of the World Wide Web, we are able to obtain information from all over the world almost instantly. We can keep track of the financial index or watch a live football match by web-broadcast. Moreover, we can receive the most updated news from radio programmes, television news reports and even satellite broadcast. There are more and more sources of information provided by modern technology.
Not only has the transfer of information become much quicker, the flow of it is no longer one-way for interactive communication between people is made possible and convenient by modern technology. For instance, many people can discuss a hot issue on the internet forum together. Also multimedia elements can be posted. We can share videos, photos or other types of data. The connections between people have become closer and more interdependent than before.
In addition, modern technology lets us go online no matter where we are and when it is. Wireless technology such as Wi-fi and 3G enable us to gain access to the internet disregarding space and time constraints. This is really a major advancement in technology. It breaks through the limits of wired network, allowing us to obtain information and interact with others anywhere and at any time
All in all, modern technology does shorten the distance between people, and we are the ones who benefit from it.
