In recent years, studying abroad has been all the rage. More and more students go studying abroad after completing Secondary Three. Some people say yes – they should do that, while some people say no. In this essay, I’m going to tell you the advantages and drawbacks of studying abroad after completing Form3.
First of all, I’m going to talk about the advantages. Studying abroad will certainly help to improve students’ English. When students are studying abroad, they are exposed to an English-speaking environment. They have to communicate with native speakers in daily lives, using English anytime. Through communication, students could develop confidence in speaking English. After practicing day by day, their English must have been improved.
Secondly, students could experience foreign culture. They could witness the local festival celebrations, try the local cuisine and visit the local scenic spots. These experiences will broaden students’ horizons and benefit their career. Not only watching on TV and the Internet, students could experience by themselves. Students nowadays should no longer focus on their surrounding only, but on different parts of the world.
Although studying abroad is beneficial, however, it still has some disadvantages which should also be considered.
For a start, the high cost of studying abroad is the main problem. For most of the high schools or universities in foreign countries, they set very high school fees. Apart from that, daily expenses are also expensive due to the high living standards in foreign countries. It’s difficult for most families in Hong Kong to afford. Before going to study abroad, students must really consider if their families can support them economically.
In the next place, homesickness might be a disadvantage. Students have to adapt to a totally new environment. Usually students have to stay in foreign countries for a long period of time to finish their studies. They might not get used to the weather and culture. Staying away from families might make them upset and depressed. Especially for Form 3 students, they might not be mature enough to handle their chores.
Studying abroad has both advantages and drawbacks. I think that studying abroad has more advantages than drawbacks. Facing problems and difficulties is inevitable. The cost of studying abroad is expensive, but it’s for the students to decide if it’s worth that. All in all, students must consider seriously before making decisions.
