On April 21, all Form One students and their class teachers from Carmel Secondary School went to Ocean Park as that day was the Learning-without-wall Day. This program encourages students to broaden their horizons, enable them to develop multiple intelligences and gain precious experience through out-of-class learning.
The students visited the Grand Aquarium and saw different kinds of fishes, such as sharks, manta rays, sea horses and a lot of tropical fishes. They observed them carefully and filled in the names of the external body features of the animals on the worksheet which was given by the teachers. For example, manta rays have cephalic fins which help them to catch the prey easily. They can grab the prey and push the surrounding water into its mouth. Afterwards, the students went to the ‘Amazing Asian Animals’. They saw giant pandas, little red pandas and sea otters. The students observed them closely just through a piece of glass.
Then, they visited the South Pole Spectacular and saw Gentoo penguins and Arctic foxes. The penguins were diving in and out of the water. The students even took selfies with one of the adorable penguins swimming towards them! Lastly, the students went on rides such as Arctic Blast, Cable Car, Rev Booster, The Flash and Wild Twister. Some of them screamed and shouted as they felt excited but scared. The Flash was their favourite so they went on it for a few more times.
After this visit, the students have learned that this unforgettable and meaningful trip actually taught them to protect the animals and their habitats so that they won’t be extinct and the future generations can admire them. They also felt inspirational about the animals’ habitats and food.
