The very first Sports Carnival was hosted yesterday, 11th September, with the efforts put together by the Sports Club in the past two years. Co-hosted by the Sports Club and the four Houses, Sports Carnival aims to spread awareness about sports health and bring the joy of sports to students. Booths were set up by the hosts throughout the day, and the Hall was home to a sports performance by student-athletes who were in the regional gymnastics and artistic dance teams.
The Sports Carnival officially kicked off with a simple opening ceremony. The Head of the Sports Department, Mr. Blue, gave a concise opening speech, while the four House Captains and the Chairperson of the Sports Club announced the start of the long-awaited carnival.
Anson Lam, the Chairperson of the Sports Club, was more than elated.
“I’ve been watching the previous club Chairpersons campaigning for the carnival. They kept writing up proposals to fight for this [Sports Carnival], and when I ascended to this position, I wanted to follow in their footsteps and honour what they have wanted for years. It is such a great thing that we managed to make it possible, and I am forever grateful to the alumni for their proposals, help, and suggestions that made today perfect.” Anson was beyond excited to show us the work he and the alumni have done.
The four Houses gave the Sports Carnival their all in planning and incorporating sports elements into their booths.
Loyalty House had set up an archery booth with sports health information written on foam boards as targets. Students target the correct foam boards and get a prize— a microfibre workout towel— when they correctly hit more than three targets in one round.
Jadyn Tam, the Captain of Loyalty House, shared with us the efforts put in by the Houses for this Sports Carnival.
“Well, we were on a tight schedule while preparing for the booths, and we hosted interhouse and intrahouse meetings all the time to coordinate with other Houses. Can you believe that at some point, Trust House and Intellect House got the same basketball theme? James (Trust House Captain) and Jonathan (Intellect House Captain) nearly had a fight to get the theme!” Jadyn laughed while reminiscing about the preparatory process. “It’s a miracle Loyalty got everything together and ready; we just confirmed our theme a week ago! I want to thank my House committee members for sticking with me throughout the planning and giving me support.”
On a fun note, neither Trust nor Intellect got the basketball theme for their booths. Charlotte Kwok, Captain of Virtue House, got the last laugh in the fight for the basketball-themed booth.
The dance performance attracted most of the crowd yesterday. Students flocked to the Hall to glimpse the performance and gave thunderous applause at the end.
Choreographed by the team leader, Chloe Wong, the dance incorporated many styles. As a k-pop enthusiast and a member of the regional gymnastics team, Chloe chose a remix of a famous Korean pop song. She added elements of gymnastics throughout the song. The performers also gave a session to students on correct warm-up stretches and taught students some famous k-pop dances.
“The choreography is simply brilliant, and the dancers are true professionals! Who would’ve thought Carmel is home to such talented athletes?” A junior form student who wished to remain anonymous noted, “though what attracted me most is definitely the air-conditioners, other booths were under the blazing hot sun, and I simply don’t want to sweat on a hot September day.”
All in all, the Sports Carnival was a staggering success and brought students a refreshed start for the brand-new school year.
