Many
people have different opinions on whether smokers who become parents should be
forced to quit smoking. Many people who do not smoke think that it is a
definite yes for this issue because they think that smoking is unhealthy for
everyone, especially children. But for the people who smoke, the answer may not
be a yes because they enjoy smoking very much and it is not that easy for them
to quit smoking. For me, it is an absolutely yes. Smokers who become
parents should be forced to quit smoking.
First,
smoking is an activity that chronically affects human physical health. It
causes many critical health problems, for example, lung cancer and
nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC),. t Their worst case is death.
Smoking produces secondhand smoke and third-hand smoke. Children will breathe
in the chemicals in the secondhand and third-hand smoke, and the children’s
health will be damaged. As a parent, they should take good care of their
children’s health but not damage their health. Also, it is unfair to the
children as their health is affected with no choice. Therefore, I think smokers
should be forced to quit smoking if they become parents.
Second, as a parent, it is the responsibility to be a good model for the children. For children, their parents are their role model. They will follow what their parents do easily, although they do not intend to follow. Children are shaped by adults around them and parents can affect children easily, so parents should not do erroneous habits before children. Moreover, in common sense, everyone knows that smoking is not a favorable habit. Therefore, parents should not smoke in front of children. Thence, I think smokers should be forced to quit smoking when they become parents.
Third, parents smoke may affect children’s childhood a lot. Every child likes to have a wonderful and memorable childhood, and to create a childhood like that, parents are indispensable. Parents are the one who accompany children the most when they are young, they are the one who children enjoy the childhood with. Parents are the most important part of the children’s childhood. However, parents smoking may destroy all these dreams. Parents will lose their health and cannot stay with their children. In addition, children may also leave bad memories. For example, children’s classmates may bully them just because they have some bad smell, the smell of smoke, on their bodies and clothes. This must be a trauma to them. These are not beneficial to the children’s childhood. Therefore, I think smokers should be forced to quit smoking when they become parents.
To sum up, it is not worthy for smokers to keep this habit when they become parents. Maybe some people will think that it is the freedom of smokers to choose whether to quit smoking or not, but I think, to be a responsible parent, and be fair to the children, we should learn to care for the children. Therefore, I think smokers who become parents should be forced to quit smoking.
