Lucky Village                 (2014 Paper 2 Part A)

Life in Lucky Village 40 years ago

Remember when the world was without mobile phones or the internet? Lucky Village was so isolated that the villagers lived lives their own way, almost oblivious to the outside world. There was only one grocery store for villagers to shop for their daily supplies. Commuting to the city was obviously possible, but not spontaneously. Out of the twenty families that lived in Lucky Village, only five of them owned vehicles. When the kinds needed to go to school, or when adults went to work, carpool was the way to go. 7-seaters often became 9-seaters, but nobody would even complain about it. They made the most out of the situation, so that they could continue their simple lifestyle. Those were the days when neighbours meant everything to the villagers.

What Lucky Village is famous for

Lucky Village is famous for being the supply station for hikers and campers. Dehydrated and starving hikers often come to Lucky Village for refreshments. The villagers are also known for their hospitality towards visitors. Visitors to the parlour are greeted with a glass of herbal tea. The refreshing drink now becomes the symbol of the village, receiving praises from visitors. The recipe, however, is never disclosed and the villagers want to keep it that way. Now people hike across the mountain from the city just to have a sip of the herbal tea. It is THAT good.

An event that changed Lucky Village

As aforementioned, Lucky Village is known for being a hider’s refreshment stop. It was back in the 90’s that this became known to the outside world.

In 1996, a group of young men went missing while hiking in the mountains. None of their families could contact anyone of them. After a whole day of searching, the rescue squad could not find the slightest traces of the group. Most people thought they could not beat Mother Nature. Two days later, a villager went to town and contacted the police. It turned out that the group sought refuge in Lucky Village after losing their directions. Had they not found Lucky Village, they would have most likely not survived. Since then, everyone has known Lucky Village as the refuge of hikers.
