Automation simply means things get done by technology and not by humans. And it has been around us for a long time. In the old times, there used to be jobs like gas-pumpers, telephone operators, elevator attendants which are all you may never heard or seen one before. That is because they are all eliminated by automation. And speaking of it, one of the famous cases is that millions of factory workers became unemployed because of automation around the world. Yet, despite all of this, we never run out of work even till this day. Why?
It is clear that technology has taken over many jobs in the past, but it also creates many new types of jobs. For example, back in the days, when cars became popularized among citizens, people whose work was to drive horse carriages for people started to disappear while new businesses related to cars appeared, such as car washing shops and motels, creating jobs opportunities for more people. This process is still continuing. Since the Internet has come to be, there are fewer jobs like travel agents, but more jobs like tech helpers or internet providers that revolve around the Internet. Besides, technology cannot replace all the jobs. For example, it cannot replace artists or inventors as those jobs need creativity which robots and machines do not have. We, therefore, still have enough jobs for the past few centuries.
As such, will machines take over our jobs? Yes, as many jobs have already been taken over by them. However, our jobs as a whole will not be taken over. As some of the jobs will survive this rising of automation, and some will be appeared due to this technology.
