The book that I am going to share with you is ‘ Kate Kazoo, Swithceroo, Karate Katie’. It is about Katie’s friend, Kevin. He quits the relay team as he has started learning a new skill, karate. He even starts to brag in front of his classmates and friends by showing them his karate forms. This makes everybody dislike Kelvin. However, the magic wind turns Katie into Kelvin right before the karate tournament starts! Katie knows nothing about karate so she makes Kevin lose in the tournament. She feels sorry for him and asks him to try hard in other tournaments. Finally, Kevin understands that bragging will make others feel awful and he gets along with his classmates and friends again.
Guess what? Kevin Camilleri visited my school last Monday. He arrived at our school at nine o’clock. When he saw our school, he was very excited and clapped his hands. As he was an elementary school student, he would love to take a look at a secondary school in Hong Kong. He first walked around on the ground floor, taking photos of the old wing covered playground and the scenery of Hong Kong which could be seen from the new wing playground. After observing the structure of our school building, Kevin went to the school hall to prepare for the sharing which he would give during the long assembly.
After all the students sat in the hall, Kevin appeared on the stage, wearing his karate costume. The karate costume made him look very powerful, and he also wore a smart yellow belt which showed the grade he was in. Kevin introduced himself first, ‘Hello everybody. I am Kevin Camilleri. I come here today to share my experiences with you all and to promote karate.’ He then nodded his head and showed us the medals he had won in the tournaments before. After a while, Kevin started his sharing. He asked whether we like other people to appreciate our talents and we all said yes. ‘ Showing off your skills may be a good way to let others know how special you are. However, you should not brag too many times. Sometimes, you have to learn from the others too, as every human has his or her own talents. Too much bragging will make people have bad feelings toward you, too.’ Kevin reminded us. He also told us the advantages of learning karate, for example, it can develop the sense of reaction and speed, also train your sense of timing and anticipation.
Finally, Kevin performed a few karate forms to us. ‘Keeyah!’ He shouted as he jumped up and kicked his leg. Then, he passed a thick wooden board to a student who was randomly picked. The student was told to hold up the thick board so that Kevin could break the board.’Keeyah!’ Kevin shouted again. He spread his arms wide. The board split in two immediately. Most students stood up and cheered for Kevin. Then he left after taking photos with all students.
I was amazed by Kevin’s karate skills. He was just a primary 5 student but he had so much power. Although judo and karate are different, his sharing has given me the power to learn judo continuously so that I can be as powerful as Kevin in the future.
