I was very excited and longing for the big day. This was because my school would visit an Old Folks’ Home. It was the first time for me to be a volunteer. It was the most meaningful visit that I had ever made.
At noon, we took the coach to the Old Folks’ Home. We all lined up neatly. When we were very quiet, our class teacher – Mrs. Lee gave us the briefing and what we needed to help. We were all very excited. Then, it was the time to set off.
At around one o’clock, Mrs. Lee brought us to a big room. We had a great greeting with the elderly there. They were extremely kind and nice. They were talkative too. Most of them told us about their childhoods and their children. One of them even said I was as lovely as her grandchildren. We became friends easily.
After that, we started our special performance that we had prepared for two weeks. Some of us played musical instrument. Sim was in the middle of us singing the song. John was playing the guitar while I was playing the accordion. Lily, Kiki and Didi were dancing with the music elegantly. The elderly laughed and gave us a big clap. This made me very proud.
Then, we gave the gifts to the elderly. The gifts were cookies, sweaters, egg rolls, towels … They were very surprised and didn’t want to receive the gifts. At last, they said that if we ate with them, they would receive them. So, we ate the treats together happily.
At last, we helped for the housework. Some of us made the beds. Some of us cleaned the windows. Some of us swept the floor and some of us cleaned the floor. Although we were extremely tired, we enjoyed it very much.
It was the time to leave soon. The elderly went out of the Old Folk’s Home with their sticks, wearing a big smile on their faces. They were waving hands, saying ‘COME AGAIN VERY SOON!’ and ‘GOODBYE!’ while we were leaving. I looked at them through the window and thought, ‘The coach will bring us home, but the happiness must stay in the hearts of the elderly and mine forever.’
