‘Social media can be a blessing and a curse’. It is a blessing because of its convenience, but how about the curse?
According to the passage, people are accustomed to looking at their smartphones constantly. They then find it intolerable when they do not have their smartphones with them.
Second, social media does not help increase people’ s powers of concentration, but makes them impatient. For example, people expect to get information they want straightly from the Internet, but they will not always get satisfying results.
Third, people waste a lot of time surfing the Internet. However, they do not get much news. That’s because people use smartphones just for entertainment and socializing, but seldom for the concern about global or social affairs.
Lastly, social media tools make people become weak in communication as they text with one another instead of talking face-to-face.
I agree with what the writer suggested, that we should take heed of the drawbacks of overusing social media. As I see in Hong Kong, most people, either teenagers or adults, are holding and watching their smartphones all the time. They chat and check Facebook and Instagram etc. Only some of them use their smartphones to search useful information like news. Looking at the monitor for a long time hurts eyes.
