My addiction was watching TV programmes. I usually spent tow hours or above on it every day. I knew it was a waste of time, but I couldn’t stop myself from switching on the television. I loved it because it gave me fun. I hated it because it was just like the harmful drugs, which I couldn’t live without.
My English assignment in the Easter holidays was to overcome an addiction. On the first day, I told myself that I could do it. I could stay away from the TV. Watching TV was the only entertainment for me when I felt bored and had free time. So, it was difficult for me to live without it. Because of the uniform test, there was much work to do in the holidays. I could not go out or play with my friends. At night, when we were going to eat dinner, I could not resist the temptation of the TV and wanted to switch it on. My mother stopped me and asked me to stay away from it.
The next day, I was feeling twinges of withdrawal. The TV was just like the harmful drugs. If I didn’t take the drugs, I would feel twinges and pain. My mother saw this, and asked me to do housework with her when I felt bored. So, after a few hours, when I felt bored, I prepared lunch with my mother. She also taught me how to make some delicious food. I felt proud of myself because I could make some delicious food. Also, when I was cooking, I talked with my mother and this improved our relationship.
On the third day I did the same thing when I felt bored. I didn’t feel twinges anymore. I talked with my mother and shared how I felt. It was fun sometimes when we told some jokes.
There’s a pride to saying ‘no’ to things. I can be free and make a real life with my family. There’s a big improvement between me and my family. I feel happy from this. Besides, I can learn a vital lesson in self-discipline. I can learn to overcome the temptation of watching TV. I can choose to watch TV or not. I am not controlled by the TV anymore. This is good news to me. In addition, I can save time from it. I can have much time to do other things.
In short, I can learn many things from this action. Miss Ng, thank you for helping me to stay away from my bad habit – watching TV!
