Overworking does harm one’s health

According to the international Labour organization, the maximum working hours per worker should be 40 hours per weeks, which means each employee works approximately 8 hours a day. However, it was discovered that many staff in our company are leaving late. This phenomenon worries us a lot so the company would like to undergo a thorough investigation and tackle the problem as soon as possible.

In the past two months (November and December), they were treated as the “high season” of our company. Many companies came and requested us to audit their financial statements. It surely increased our workload. Also, many clients required us to hand in the reports to them before the end of December. In order to meet the requirements of the clients, the number of people leaving the office late has reached the peak. Some of the staff even worked overnight to get their work done. Not only did this situation happen in the past two months, but this also continues throughout the entire year. This is probably related to the increasing number of customers.

Take the survey we have conducted recently as a reference. Nearly half of the staff have worked for 50 hours a week, which reflected the seriousness of the problem. But according to our observation, a portion of workers are playing their smartphones or dealing with their own things instead of working in the afternoon. This may account for their not making any progress in work even though they work overtime.

In the short term, I guess many of you may think leaving the office late, you can earn more (overtime compensation), but actually there are couples of negative effects in the long term. Working overtime means you need to delay the meal time. It surely brings harm to your stomach and may cause them to the whole digestive system. Also, there are statistics showing that people eat on an irregular basic usually catch diseases easily. Moreover, long working hours reduce one’s leisure and resting time. After a day of working, people need to enjoy the free time to maintain a balance between resting and working; otherwise, they will be stressed. Usually the people who have worked for long hours continuously are more likely to grumble about their lives. Bad thinking may pop up in their mind, worsening their quality of life.

Besides, spending too many hours on working may worsen your relationship with your families. As you have less time chatting with your family. If this happens continuously, a gap will be formed between you and your family members gradually.

The staff is the most precious assets of a company. We want our staff to be in a healthy condition and find happiness from work. Therefore, I suggest the human resources department recruit part-time staff during the high season in order to relieve the other staff’s heavy burden. Second, I suggest setting a break time, for example, from 3:00pm to 3:15pm every day so as to let the staff wind themselves down. The staff also can handle some of their private things during the break. A rest can be a fuel for people to focus on their work more afterwards.

I hope this situation can be solved and all staff in our company can strike a good balance between work and leisure.
