A letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my view on the issue of doping in sports. Nowadays, many teenagers love sports. They are devoting their precious sleeping time to watching football matches at midnights or spending the limited recess time on playing ball games such as basketball, volleyball or badminton. Many of them look up to elite sport stars as their role models and hope to imitate their brilliant examples in their career aspiration and ways of living.

After I have read an article about LanceArmstrong, who has been found guilty of drug abuse, I feel disappointed about athletes doping in sports. Athletes are supposed to be a role model for teenagers. When teenagers love sports, he will start paying close attention to the news and gossips about the athletes and follow what they do. Therefore, the action of athletes will affect teenagers deeply.

Take Armstrong as an example. Although cycling is not the most popular sport among teenagers, for the teenagers who like cycling, the news of this famous road racing cyclist doping in the sport will badly affect him. Since Armstrong won many awards after taking drugs, this will give a wrong message to teenagers that if they want to become as good as Armstrong, they need to take drugs.

Besides, doping in sports also destroys the spirit of doing sports. People do sports and take part in competitions because they want to live a healthy life and observe the skills of other athleteswhile competing with them fairly. However, if teenagers win the competitions after they have taken drugs, it is unfair to their competitors and it is also not showing any respect to all other competitors. In addition, doping in sports is harmful to human bodies. Physically, it will cause impaired liver function, hair loss, premature closure of the epiphysis and other bad effects on body. Mentally, once you have been found guilty of drug abuse, you will lose your fame and honors. It is because the competition you have joined after you take drugs will be disqualified and the public will feel disappointed about you. Finally, you will lose everything suddenly and the result will be traumatic.

Every athlete wants to have good results in the competition; however, if one of the athletes uses heterodoxies to win the competition, it is unfair to other athletes because everyone tries their best in this competition. Doping in sports not only harms one’s body, it also makes others look down on you. Therefore all athletes should use their own power to win the competition.

Yours faithfully,

Macy Chong
