Hello Carmelians! Have you ever heard about the book ‘Holes’? It is a novel which takes place in a juvenile detention in Camp Green Lake, a dried-up one. The boys there together form a lot of exciting scenes. Among all the youngsters, I am impressed with Hectic Zeroni who has got an interesting nickname, Zero. He is quiet and black-skinned, with a wide-mouthed smile always in his face. Let me tell you more about Zero.
First of all, Zero is impulsive. Once, Mr. Pendanski who is a counselor teases Zero by saying he is too stupid to learn reading and writing. Without a second thought, the young boy smashed Mr. Pendanski with a shovel. Zero has never considered his possible consequences. Perhaps he will be arrested! Maybe Mr. Pendanski will take revenge on him! Who can predict? It is to impetuous for Zero to do so.
Besides, Zero is courageous. Although he knows nothing about the location and direction of God’s Thumb, a mountain that Zero is going to find, he is still determined to pass all the holes to run away from Camp Green Lake.
What’s more, Zero is a hardworking boy. He has been homeless before entering Camp Green Lake since he was small. Zero gets no education thus he is not capable of reading and writing. Then he asks Stanley, a friend of him, to teach him. The young boy has to learn from the basic twenty-six letters which are supposed to be learnt in kindergarten. Zero is still willing to learn. Not only does he pay mental effort, he also pays physical effort. In order to let Stanley have more energy to teach him, Zero suggests to help dig a part of Stanley’s hole. We can see that Zero has a really positive learning attitude.
Zero is also an honest guy. He confesses to Stanley that he is the one who steals the pair of shoes. Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake because he is caught of stealing a pair of shoes. However, Stanley is the real thief and accidentally, the stolen shoes go to Stanley’s hands. You can say that Zero indirectly makes Stanley into Camp Green Lake. Although it is a really big matter to Stanley, Zero still tells the truth. This shows that Zero is very honest.
