Nowadays, people can see many things from around the world through their TVs and the internet. It is true that these two hi-tech gadgets can provide us with loads of information about the world. However, this does not mean people do not need to travel. I think that no matter how much information the media provides us, it still can never replace actual travelling to other places. Therefore, I disagree with the statement.
First, even though we can see the world through the internet and on TV, we still cannot experience the different cultures from all parts of the world without actually being there. The media can provide all sorts of information about the world. There are many documentaries and travelling programs on TV which show us what the world looks like and how different people live their lives in different places. The websites online give us all sorts of information about a place like the weather, natural scenery, famous delicacy and so on. However, we can never be able to be actually in that foreign place to feel and experience the livelihood there. For example, everyone knows that in Australia, there are a few special animals like kangaroos and koalas. Without travelling to Australia and just sitting in front of the screen, we can never be close to these adorable creatures. Nor can we stroke them and feel the softness of their fur. Let me give another example. For instance, we can acknowledge a lot of descriptions about beautiful scenery from TV and the internet. But can we listen to the flowing water splashing on rocks? Can we smell the fragrance of the flowers? Can we feel the cool breeze and listen to the birds’ sweet singing? No! We only know about a place but cannot imagine the precise feeling about being there without travelling to the place in person.
Second, it is difficult to really see the world on the internet and on TV as usually only information of large and well-known cities is broadly provided to us. Television programmes always introduce to us those popular places but often leave out the quieter spots. Even for London, the programmes and websites have endless details about the famous Big Ben or the London Eye, but never mention the small villages in the countryside. In other words, the internet and TV can only show us well-known tourist spots of a place but cannot let us see the full picture of the entire place, let alone the world. Moreover, there are definitely some places where humans have not reached yet. Those places are waiting to be discovered by us. The world is full of unknowns. If we stop travelling because we think we can see the whole wide world at home, then places would remain be unknown forever as nobody will explore new places without travelling.
I agree that the internet and TV programmes give us rich information about many places in the world and it is definitely more convenient than travelling but travelling can never be replaced by the internet and TV. Travelling brings a lot of benefits to our world like helping economic development and I think people should always travel to broaden their horizons no matter how much knowledge we can learn from the media.
