Have you ever seen stray animals on the street?  I bet it is not an uncommon situation in Hong Kong.  According to some surveys, there are about 25000 stray dogs in the New Territories.  This is yet only part of the story.  Thousands of strays are found in the urban area. In fact, animals are to be protected, not for fun.

Many couples nowadays prefer owning a pet rather than a child.  About 280000 households have pets in Hong Kong, which is about 12.6 percent of local families.  There is no doubt that pets are lovely and most of us would like to have one. As a member of the SPCA, I hope you can think twice before keeping a pet and be a responsible owner.  Keeping a pet is a life-long commitment, so have to bear the responsibility of protecting our pets and give respect their lives.

Before getting a pet, there are a few things that should be considered. Firstly, it is time and money.  If you are not willing to spare your time to take care of your pet, how can it feel your love and care? Money is also vital as the veterinary bills are not cheap.  Moreover, if the pet is found to be a nuisance to the ones in your family, you should not invite trouble. The most important point is, are you ready to make a life-long commitment? Please do not think of giving it up or regret when you are tired of cleaning your pet’s excretion. It will really suffer if you don’t fulfill your promise.

Apart from pet owners, all of us should also give a helping hand to animal protection.  Animal abuse cases are rising sharply in these few years.  We often hear that stray dogs and cats are being attacked in the backstreets in some areas like Mongkok.  Cold-blooded abusers even chop off the legs of puppies and leave them dying. Don’t you think it is inhumane to treat our lovely friends like this? Animals are also lives. They have feelings and emotions like humans! In order to stop animal abuse, we should report suspected animal abuse cases to the police. Offenders will be penalized. Moreover, SPCA welcomes donations from everyone to help the stray animals, finding new homes for them and promoting animal welfare.  Moreover, if you would like to aid the animals directly, you could also be a volunteer of SPCA like me.  Details can be found on our website.  Animals need protection from all of us in Hong Kong.  We cannot clap with one hand.

Indeed, animal protection needs the help from every one of you. Animals have rights and deserve your respect. They need your help. Act now!
