Hong Kong is known as a cultural desert. Although there are some places of art and culture, these places have never been popular. Therefore some artistes start to perform in the streets. Because of this, I don’t think street performers should be banned.
First, I do think Hong Kong needs more artistic and cultural elements. Street performers have removed the dull image of Hong Kong. They bring much happiness and special talent to the onlookers. They make packed streets more lively and cultural. For example, some underground bands would perform in the busy streets, and attract many passers-by. These bands even have a chance to share their original songs. This is how street-performing helps to build the cultural image of Hong Kong.
Street performers will also become a distinctive mark for Hong Kong when promoted. Different performers have different talents. Some are good at juggling and others do street dramas. These special shows may be famous and attract tourists. In other countries, street performances are popular and there is even a saying that in western countries, if you open a box and perform, you may get enough money to get back home. I really think that Hong Kong should promote our unique street performances by holding a street-performer festival. It will become a landmark for Hong Kong.
Finally, street performance is a platform for different kinds of people to share their ideas. Teenagers who wish to have experience to be a performer can choose the street platform. If their dream is being a singer, they could first try it on the street. In Paris, a street singer performed singing and his wish came true. He is Dave Bosio. This is a good example to show that street performing could broaden one’s experience and make dreams come true.
Someone may say that street performing will block the main streets and pedestrians could not pass through. But these are all exaggerations. Yes, maybe it causes some crowds, but with suitable organization, the streets will not be packed anymore and onlookers still can enjoy the performance. This is a win-win situation all around, isn’t it? In conclusion, I see that allowing street performers to stay on streets has more advantages than disadvantages. Therefore we should allow street performers on the streets.
