Zero is a character in a book called "Holes". He has no family and no one knows where he comes from. As he never answers other people's questions, others think that there is nothing in his mind. That is the reason why others call him "Zero". He is always bullied and laughed by others as others think he is very stupid and only likes to dig holes. However, Zero is not only zero.
Actually, he is very pitiful. He only lives with his mother since he is young and they have no home, they only sleep on the streets. However, one day, his mother leave him in the park and never comes back, he then becomes an orphan when he is still a little child. Since then, he sleeps on the streets by himself everyday. After he comes to 'Camp Green Lake', he is always bullied and laughed by others. One time, even an adult in 'Camp Green Lake' also laughs at him" He (Zero) is so stupid, he doesn't even know he's stupid." From these events, we know that Zero is actually very poor.
Also, Zero is very studious. When he knows the other boy in the camp called Stanley knows how to read and write, he begs Stanley to teach him even though he needs to dig a hole everyday and doesn't have much free time at all. Moreover, he always tries to pronounce some words all the time (even digging the holes) that he doesn't know base on his limited knowledge. Then he will ask Stanley if he is correct, it somehow shows that he wants to learn all the time.
However, he is a bit impulsive. One time, when Stanley is beaten by ZigZag, he nearly kills ZigZag in order to save Stanley. Although he only wants to help Stanley, it is too impulsive of him to do it. Also, when Mr. Pendanski tries to laugh him as a stupid guy, he even swings the shovel to hit him. Although it is not good of him to be so impulsive, it somehow shows that Zero has changed, he now knows how to express his emotions and feelings even though he uses the wrong method.
Actually, Zero is not really stupid, it somehow is very clever. He is good at mathematics. He once says "instead of 26 letters, there are really 52."At that time, he even has not finished learning the26 letters. But why he always doesn't speak? He explains to Stanley "I'm not stupid. I know everybody thinks I am. I just don't like answering questions." Therefore, he is actually an intelligent boy.
On the whole, I think Zero is a likable character even though he is somehow too impulsive. It is because he is such an intelligent and studious boy. After I finished reading the book, I think Zero has changed. He is a reserved boy in the past. But after he meets Stanley, he tries to speak more and is willing to express his emotions now. Therefore, when you meet some "Zero" in your daily lives, they probably are not zero!
