A Lesson in Wonderland

One night, I was awakened by the sound of distant thunder. As I opened my eyes, I saw a place with a lot of colours and patterns like those in in Pablo Picasso’s drawings. Birds were swimming while fishes were flying. A blue-haired fairy fluttered towards me. ‘I’m the Blue Fairy in Pinocchino. I sent you to Wonderland as you don’t help your friends. I’ll send you to a quest. If you reject your friends’ need or fail the quest, you cannot go home!’ She warned me. ‘Why on earth am I here?’ I muttered when a big rabbit bounced into me.

‘I’m so sorry! I’m late! I must pick up Alice!’ The rabbit chanted furiously. I guess he was the Red Rabbit or the March Hare. ‘Wait! You are Alice! I’m the Red Rabbit, Peter! I’ll explain later! We must go!’

‘Huh? What-‘ Before I could finish my words, Peter already tugged me and strode as fast as lightning! Zoom! We bumped into a cottage when Peter’s watch chimed. I noticed it was made of butter.

‘Thank goodness! You are finally here! Rose lost her patience! We must go!’ A huge mouse chanted. BANG! A teapot flew out of the cottage and hit a tree! To my surprise, the tree fell down but the teapot was unharmed. ‘Actually…I don’t really understand…Could you…explain…?’ I stammered. Peter stared at me.

‘You don’t know? I’ll explain. Maddie, sorry, Mad Hatter was captured by Jabberwock for a secret recipe of brewing tea. Rose, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, decided to help us (for the reason “A princess must save her subjects”). She took the Vorpal, the only sword to defeat Jabberwock. We are waiting for you! By the way, I’m Sleepy, the Sleep Mouse.’ Sleepy said with so much effort that he almost yelled at me.

‘Off with your head! Let’s go! We’ve packed!’ A girl dressed in red with crimson hair yelled. ‘I’m Rose but you need to address me as “Her Majesty the Red Princess!’ Rose was holding a golden sword with sliver words embroidered ‘Vorpal’. Hmm, was it the Vorpal?

After three hours of mocking and arguing, we arrived in front of the Jabberwock’s cave. Phew! As Peter’s shivering, a tiny cloud surrounded him and turned him into a hare! The March Hare! ‘That’s why I won’t read about Peter when the March Hare is taking the role in the book!’ I muttered.

‘GROWL!’ I immediately recognized the ‘thunder’ that woke me up! A faint, helpless scream followed. “HELP!’ ‘Let’s go in! A queen must save her subjects!’ Rose ordered. She tried to get in the cave but a brown river stopped her. ‘Yuck! I’d rather have tea!’ She yelled, disgusted. Suddenly, a goblin appeared. ‘Do you want to cross? You must answer questions in order to cross the Goblin Bridge.’ I volunteered. ‘You must go over your fears as the goblin will ask you embarrassing questions. ‘Sleepy warned me. Argh! Why did I volunteer?

‘First question. What is the formula of circumference?’ Argh! Maths made my head spin! But I must answer it. Circumference means the perimeter of a circle…Hmm…’Aha! The formula is diameter times the answer of 22 divided by 7!’ I answered. I saw some stones forming into a quarter of a bridge!

‘Second question. What is the answer of -144 divided by 12 and divided by -0.4?’ I hated numbers! I felt my brain was going to explode! I calculated quickly. ‘Er…-30?’ I offered. ‘Wrong!’ The goblin bellowed. ‘Um…30!’ I quickly changed my answer. I saw the bridge had already formed half. Aha! I was right!

‘Third question. What is your favourite subject?’ Wow, that’s pretty embarrassing! Not everyone in my class like English! Someone even thought English was boring!

‘Er…Sports.’ I lied. ‘You are LYING!’ The bridge shook. ‘Okay, it’s English.’ I answered truthfully.

‘Last question. Why do you still hug teddy bears when you’re asleep?’

Wow, red alarm! That’s so embarrassing! I wanted to dig a hole and hide! Or I could just lie about it but I couldn’t. ‘Um…Well,… it seems…safer…’I stammered, my cheeks are burning. Now Rose would sneer! I thought. ‘You may pass.’ The goblin told us. I zoomed across and noticed Rose’s cheeks flushed red. ‘I…uh…I…still hug…teddy bears too…’Her voice trailed off. Oh! She’s sixteen while I’m still twelve! That’s unbelievable!

‘GROWL!’ Jabberwock was threatening Mad Hatter. ‘Stop that! Off with your head! Face the wrath of the princess!’ Rose hollered. ‘I, the Princess of Hearts, declare that I’ll defeat you!’

‘You? You’re just a little girl. A puny girl.’ Jabberwock started humiliating Rose. ‘Argh! Hedgehogs! Attack!’ Rose demanded. Suddenly, hedgehogs began to spout from the ground! They started to attack Jabberwock while Sleepy, the March Hare untied the Mad Hatter. Rose flung the Vorpal towards Jabberwock but she missed it. The Vorpal flew back towards me. I picked it up and threw it to the Mad Hatter. ‘Vorpal! Come!’ The Jabberwock bellowed. The Vorpal flew to Jabberwock and Jabberwock flew it towards Rose! ‘Ahh!’ Rose screamed. I closed my eyes, not bearing to see the bloody scene.

‘Ahh! Sleepy!’ Rose wailed. Huh? I opened my eyes, confused. Sleepy sacrificed himself! Rose burst in tears.

The Mad Hatter rushed towards the river. He poured some brown liquid on Sleepy’s wound. It magically healed. ‘What is that?’ I asked. ‘Coffee! Ew!’ Rose said. Huh? Okay, I took that as Wonderland logic. Sleepy sat up some minutes later. ‘Thanks for saving me! I’ll give you four the permission to be my friends!’ Rose said. ‘Yes, thank you, your-uh-Rose.’ Sleepy said.

‘GROWL!’ The Jabberwock bellowed. An idea sparked in me. ‘Mad Hatter, Jabberwock captured you for a tea recipe, so how about throwing a tea party for Jabberwock?’ I asked.

‘Really?’ Jabberwock’s eyes gleamed.

‘I agree with you , Alice,’ Rose said. The following hours were my favourite hours, I have the grandest tea party ever!

While I was having fun, a bright blue butterfly fluttered towards me. Poof! The butterfly disappeared, instead, the Blue Fairy stood. ‘You’ve done a great job in helping friends and saving Mad Hatter! I’ll carry you home!’ She congratulated me. ‘Wait! Take this!’ Rose stopped the Blue Fairy. She took off her ruby crown and picked up a hedgehog. She started marking words on it. Then, she tossed the crown to me!’ I’ll miss you!’ She said.

The Blue Fairy cast a tornado and slurped me in. I fell onto my comfy bed. Was it a dream? I looked at the ruby crown with the words ‘Friends-A&R’ embroidered on it and realized it’s real. I learnt the importance of friends, who care for each other. Thanks for sending me to Wonderland, Blue Fairy! I started marking down my wonderful adventure in my diary.
