Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my views of being a student of the first-year NSS. Recently, many Hong Kong people, especially the students, have been so concerned about the implementation of NSS.
Being a student of the first-year NSS, I am not that proud because my study life is difficult to go through. The ‘invention’ of the new subject, Liberal Studies has brought huge pressure to me. So far, I have failed this subject three times but I still have no idea of how to deal with the problem. I have read many newspapers and books but this doesn’t work. How frustrating!
Besides the new subject, the heavy burden from homework has also stressed me a lot. We are asked to do lots of homework and projects to get better equipped for the new syllabus. Every night, I study and do homework until mid-night so as to get all the work done. I sleep for three to four hours only per day. This greatly dampens my spirit and concentration in lesson the next day.
What’s more, we don’t have the confidence in copying with the exam in 2012 as we don’t have past papers to follow. Moreover, we have to compete for university places with the last batch of AL students. Yet, the places in universities are limited. This is another source of trouble.
The above obstacles are not easy for us to overcome. We need others’ help, especially the government. It should ensure that there will be a fair competition for students from the two different systems. Moreover, it should hold more talks or seminars telling us the exams and requirements of HKDSE. Parents should also encourage their children more.
NSS is difficult but if we can get help from others, we can overcome all the hurdles.
