Carmel Secondary School’s “learning without Walls”, held on April 23, was a huge success.
Early in the morning, all Form Two students gathered in the school hall. We were briefed on the day’s activities. My class,2B ,and 2A were to receive a group of elderly, while the other classes would visit homes for the elderly. The aim was to promote healthy living.
Soon, the elderly arrived. My group received four elderly people, and we introduced ourselves one by one. But then silence followed. I decided to tell them we were going to talk about a healthy diet. But one of the elderly women just took the activities list from me. At that point, I found it hard to communicate with them.
Then we played the first game. The elderly had to put foods onto the right spots on the food pyramid. The six of us explained how to play the games, and gradually they warmed to us. I thought they did brilliantly.
Their next “mission” was to guess the food we covered with the paper. We gave them a lot of hints, such as “it’s a fruit and it’s small and red” for a strawberry.
When the games ended, we gave them each a food package. We also gave them beautiful cards we had drawn, and we took a group photo together.
I am glad I had a chance to meet the elderly. The “Learning without Walls” programm boosted my confidence and improved my communication skills. Most importantly, it made me realize happiness can be found when you bring happiness to others.
