Dear Paula

Recently my elder sister got married and moved out. Now for the first time in my life I have a bedroom all to myself. Do you have any tips for how I can decorate it and turn it into my own personal space?

With best wishes

Kelly

Dear Kelly,

I’m glad to receive your letter about decorating your bedroom. You know what, I also used to share my room with my sibling so I understand how excited you are to have your own space. Yet bear in mind a good planning is very important to make it the perfect place.

First of all, you can reflect on your own interests and list all the potential things you want to decorate with your bedroom. It’s just a simple draft so you are free to write down whatever you want. In my case, I was a big fan of Tom Cruise so I noted down a huge sum of his posters.  I am sure you have a bunch of ideas. Don’t be afraid to visualize it! The next step to do is to assess the feasibility of the decorations. Your room has limited space and it is simply impossible to stuff things all in. (Unless you secretly live in a palace!) Also from an aesthetic perspective, things do not look good when they’re all crumped and mismatched. There are some factors to consider when you are picking up things from the list. One is the size of your room and the size of that piece of decoration. Another factor is whether the decorations have a common theme. It can make the look of your room more consistent and harmonious. If not, it is just like heavy metal meeting Bach!

You may ask, what actual things can make the bedroom more personal? Besides the posters mentioned, pictures are brilliant choices. Although you feel pumped up about having more spaces now, later on it is sure that you will feel a bit empty and lonely without the presence of your elder sister. You can decorate your room with pictures of families and friends. I do not know if you take polaroids, but since instant cameras have been such a big hit in the recent years, I suppose decorating with them can set a safe and sound mood to your room. Apart from pictures, I’d like to give a relatively new suggestion — scented candles. As you are a girl, I hope you will like these aromatic things. It literally makes your bedroom smell personal and fragrant. There are many shops selling such products and you can choose any flavours.

I hope my advice is useful for you. If you do not mind, please send me a picture when you are done with the decorations!

Best wishes,

Paula
