Building a New Gym vs a New Library

Dear Mr Smith,

I have learnt that our school has received a grant to expand our facilities. As a student, I strongly recommend that the school build a gym instead of a library because it would be the most beneficial to both the school and the students.

First, our school lacks sports facilities. In our school, there are only one basketball court and a badminton court. In every recess and lunch time, the two courts are crowded with students. This is dangerous and will lead to higher risk of accidents. By building a gymnasium, we can improve the situation. Students can do different sports in the gym during recess and lunch breaks, for example, volleyball, basketball and badminton, and even table tennis. As a result, more students will be able to enjoy sports at school.

Second, our school has already got a library. Even though it is not large, it is quite sufficient to cater for the needs of the students for the moment. It is likely that the usage of the library is quite low compared to the two courts. Moreover, the number of books at present can satisfy both teachers and students as not too many of them intend to read after school. Therefore, I believe that there is no immediate need for the school to build a new library.

Thirdly, a gymnasium is multi-functional compared to a library. The function of library is restricted by its size and the bookshelves. Conversely, a gym can be used to hold other events instead of only doing sports, such as talks or ceremonies and fun fairs. Thus, students and teachers of other school clubs can also beneficial from the new gym.

Lastly, the gym can enhance the training efficiency of the sports teams. Since more facilities and space are provided, more school teams can have training at the same time while not affecting the others. Moreover, their training will not be affected by bad weather such as thunderstorm as they can train indoors in the gym. Therefore, they can train more regularly and effectively with the new gym. This is also beneficial to students taking PE lessons. When the weather is bad or too hot, they can still carry out their training by taking the lessons in the gym.

The building a new gymnasium is really crucial to the development of students and the school and the benefits far outweigh those of a new library. I strongly believe that building a new gymnasium is the best choice for both teachers and students.

Yours sincerely,
