Today was the audition for the inter-class drama competition. This was the day I had been preparing for since Day One of the school year.
“Alright people! Let’s see who’s going to be our Rapunzel in this play!” said Wade, our monitor and our director. When Wade called upon my name, I went up to the stage and performed the part where Rapunzel met Prince Hans. After the performance, Wade said, “Nice, Samie, but sorry we can’t let an African-American be Rapunzel, you’re going to be the backup, okay? Next!”
Next was Leah, our class’s beauty queen, who performed a lot worse than me, but Wade said, “Awesome, Leah! You’re our Rapunzel!” Then I went out of the audition room with tons of disappointment to find Eli, who appeared to be my only friend since we are both black. Eli saw my sad face and asked, “What’s wrong Samie? The audition didn’t go well?”
“No, it didn’t,” I told him “Leah is Rapunzel, I’m only the backup.”
“Don’t be sad, Samie. I’m also the backup for Prince Hans.” He tried to comfort me.
“So who’s Prince Hans?” I asked.
“King of fame, Serrure!” We both laughed.
Even though Eli and I were just backups, we still practiced hard for the competition, incase there were some accidents. I didn’t know about Eli, but I practisedwheneverI was free.
On the day of the competition, when I was chatting with Eli, Serrure and the preparation team on stage, suddenly Wade rushed towards us and told us that Leah twisted her ankle and she couldn’t be performing that evening. When Serrure heard that, he yelled, “There’s no way I’m marrying a black girl! Not even in a play! Eli, you’re Prince Hans! I quit!” and he went out the hall.
Then Wade and the preparation team brought Eli and I to the back stage to dress us up. Before the play I was very nervous, good that I had Eli next to me telling me that I would do well. The play went really well and I extremely like the last part where Rapunzel and Prince Hans got married and lived happily ever after.
At last, the judges, Miss Hill, Mr. Fury and Mr. Coulson announced the result, and our class won the Champion! Miss Hill and Mr. Coulson thought it was interesting to make the main characters into African-Americans. Even Mr. Fury who had never curved his lips before gave us a warm smile.
I told Eli, “Thanks dude, without your support I couldn’t make it to this far.”
Eli gave me a friendly hug and said, “Samie you’re the one who won this for us. You even taught me how to act during the practices. Also, this play is called “Rapunzel” not “Prince Hans” right?” Then he suddenly yelled, “Hey! Everybody! Let’s cheer for Samie!” So everyone cheered for me, I was glad that I had help.
