Dear Principal,
Our school has successfully raised a large amount of money for China’s development. Despite the excitement and delight for the huge success, the big question has come. How are we going to spend the money wisely? Finding ourselves at the crossroads to choose between the two initiatives, we should choose the one which suits our role, has greater long-term developing potential, and is effective.
To begin with, investing in basic healthcare and education in rural areas suits our role better than investing in the further space exploration in China. Our school, as an educational organization, should always spare no pains to improve the education for students and to let them grow healthily. Investing in space exploration is simply out of our areas of concern. In fact, it should be the Chinese government and other science organizations investing in it instead of us. More importantly, the money comes from students and parents. Therefore it should be spent in areas that the students, parents and our school care the most. Compared to space exploration, healthcare and education in rural areas are definitely more relevant to and more cared about by us.
Another important consideration is the effectiveness of the money spent. Undoubtedly, all of us want the money to be spent effectively on helping China so as to make the best use of it. For further space exploration, literally hundreds of billions of dollars have to be spent on each space project. Although we have raised quite an impressive amount of money, it is still like flies to dragons compared to the expenses in space exploration. In fact, the money we have raised could not even afford a minor fraction of cost needed to launch a rocket. On the contrary, our money is more than enough to offer great help to the children living in rural areas. With the capital, we could provide thousands of students with well-equipped classroom facilities like desks, chairs, fans, blackboards and stationery, better health care services like medications, free medical checkups and clean water sources. Weighing the significance of them, we can obviously see that investing the money in the children in rural areas is a better choice.
Furthermore, it is more socially beneficial to help children in rural areas with the money raised. The benefits of space exploration remain uncertain to a large extent. For instance, even if we could send a probe to Mars, we still need hundreds of years to investigate before we can finally migrate there. On the contrary, the immediate return for helping the rural areas’ students is much more considerable. Being armed with knowledge, they could be the pillars of tomorrow’s society. They could help their whole family break the poverty cycle and they could contribute to our society. In both the short and the long run, investing money in basic healthcare and education in rural areas is more socially beneficial. By no means should we forgo the chance of brightening children’s future in exchange for the intangible space exploration.
All in all, using the money to help with basic healthcare and education in rural areas is more suitable for our role, more effective and more beneficial to our society. This is undoubtedly a wise way to make the best use of the money.
Yours sincerely,
Chris Wong
