A letter to sister about a surprise event held for parent
Dear Shelley,
It’s been quite a while since I last got to write to you, so how’s life? Mine has been quite normal until recently, when I arranged a special birthday event for mom. Guess what? All the preparations and what happened during that day were filmed to be part of Surprise of Your Life, the really, really popular TV show that we used to watch a lot when you were still here.
You know how mom has been diagnosed with Cancer, right? Well, she’s basically staying at the hospital right now, receiving chemotherapy and various treatments to keep her alive. She’s been seriously affected by the side-effects of the chemotherapy, which is the loss of hair. She’s basically bald at the moment, and she’s extremely self-conscious about it. So, I decided to make her a special birthday event to be a make-over at a prestigious styling house- Millie’s.
Dad and I decided that we wanted to do something more meaningful during this event, so we also arranged an event along-side with mom’s makeover, and I’d like to call it the “Give up your hair for Cancer” event. Some volunteers and I had our locks cut off for the sake of the Cancer patients who would like to wear wigs made of real hair, apparently, there haven’t been enough donors through these years!
In preparation of the event, dad and I first went to the hospital to talk with mom’s doctors, and they all agreed that an event like this would surely cheer her up and would therefore improve her condition. Well, you know the old saying about having a healthy mind would lead to having a healthy body? I never knew it was true.
Then we went to Millie’s and booked an appointment for mom. And I also talked with the manager to see whether or not we could have other people coming in to have their hair cut for a cheaper price. To my surprise, the manager told me that they would do it for free for all the volunteers that would donate for the cause.
As for the extra event of hair donation, we organized the event through Facebook, explaining that we were doing it for the sake of charity and also to show mom that there are people out there who care about Cancer patients. I asked all my friends and relatives to spread the word about this event to other people to enhance the awareness.
On that day, dad and I took mom out of the hospital early in the morning and took her out for a walk to freshen up her mood first as she had been a bit on the grumpy side these days. Let’s just say that the walk did wonders. She was laughing and cracking jokes by the end of it!
When we arrived at Millie’s during lunchtime, a crowd had already gathered and the secret camera crew who had been tailing us appeared in front of her, completely surprising her. She looked at dad and me in shock, and when the crowd started singing “Happy Birthday” to her, she broke into tears, thanking everyone.
Sis, if you think that this reaction is great, you should’ve seen her face when we showed her the mirror after the makeover, and when she saw all the locks of hair donated by the volunteers. She looked so genuinely happy and blessed that she looked like an angel from heaven. Donning on a wig of long auburn hair, mom looked ten years younger, and more like herself before she got Cancer. It was a really happy and encouraging event for all.
Shelley, I know you may be slightly mad at me for keeping this all a secret from you until now. However, this is because I have a special mission for you! I need you to stay in Canada and help promote this TV show, especially mom’s episode, to many others so as to increase awareness of such special and wonderful events. Hope to hear from you soon!
