Dear Lucy,
I’m so glad to hear the news that you’ve won a major singing competition and have been offered a recording contract while you’re also offered a place at the police training school to become a policewoman. How brilliant you are! I’m really proud to be your friend! However, I suggest you accept the place as a police cadet rather than the recording contract.
In my view, being a singer may not be suitable for you. I’m sure that you’re a girl with a strong sense of justice since you invited me to apply for the job of a policewoman with you. It seems to be good news that you’re also talented at singing and you’re offered a contract. But bear in mind that you don’t only need to sing well if you want to be a singer. There are dark sides of the singing business and we can always see them in newspapers and magazines. There are fights, boycotts, unethical sexual deals or even drug deals among pop singers! Although they’re extreme cases, when you have to face these situations, could you really bear them? And could you withstand the pressure from those paparazzi who chase you and your family every minute and make up scandals of you? I’m so worried about you because you’re such an innocent and sincere girl. In contrast, a girl like you with such personalities and great sense of justice can never be more suitable to be a policewoman.
You do not only belong to yourself. Being a policewoman provides you with a reliable and stable monthly income while being a singer does not. In Hong Kong, a regular PC is already earning more than ten thousand dollars each month. If you perform well, you’ll be promoted to higher levels so that you can earn more. Meanwhile, being a policewoman doesn’t mean you’ll give up your singing talents. There are lots of singing contests among the police and outside. You can still share your sweet voice with others and impress them. Contrarily, being a singer may not be a stable career. Although the few famous stars really receive praises and they earn impressive incomes, there are millions of singers who earn very little and are living a very hard life. Singing is a risky career that only a very small fraction of singers could eventually succeed while most of them have to find other jobs. Even if you’re successful, your success may not last long. You’re a sensible and responsible girl. You must understand that you have to be responsible to your own family. The dream of being a famous star is wonderful but also illusive. Would you bear all the risks to pursue an intangible dream? You’re smart enough to make your choice.
After all, being a singer is really not a suitable career for you. No pain, no gain. Sometimes we just have to give up in order to earn more. We all can see that the offer
as a police cadet is a golden chance for you, why miss it? I sincerely hope you can make a wise choice.
With Love,
Chris
