I agree with the statement, ‘Examinations encourage students to learn’ ? Let me tell you the reasons now.
Firstly, examinations can remind students to study, like an alarm clock. It is effective for some lazy students since they do not have the habit to study on a regular basis. Examinations can encourage students to study hard as they want to get a good result in examinations. Consequently, they may acquire more new knowledge to improve themselves.
Secondly, examinations reflect students’ ability, being a good indicator. If students want to get higher marks, they will study hard. They can learn more in the process of studying. Therefore, the result of examinations can show how much the students have learnt and worked, showing them the direction to improve their performance.
Thirdly, some people think that examinations give students pressure. However, I think suitable pressure can encourage students to learn more. The students will have the motivation for learning and studying when there is pressure. Also, comparison between students’ performance is a kind of positive pressure. This can lead to improvement. Furthermore, examinations can equip students to face pressure in the future.
However, some people do not agree that examinations encourage students to learn. They think that when students get a bad grade in the examinations, they may get depressed and feel sad. In fact, ‘Failure is the mother of success’. I think students can learn from their mistakes and correct them. They can acquire new knowledge from examinations. Bad results can also encourage students to work harder next time whereas good results can encourage students to keep up their effort and set an even higher target.
To sum up, examinations not only can encourage students to acquire more knowledge in the process of studying, but also let students learn how to face pressure and failure in the future. Therefore, I believe that examinations can encourage students to learn.
