Today was Saturday. I visited the elderly home with the volunteers in the afternoon. It was very meaningful!
We gathered at the school playground. Also, we prepared the gifts that we would give to the elderly before we went to the home for the elderly. At two o’clock, we arrived at our destination. After the teachers had told us what we needed to do, the manager brought us to visit the elderly.
We chatted with the elderly. They told us many things about the past. They said that life was toughin the past and wars always happened. This made them feel insecure all the time. Although the elderly did not speak clearly, I learned many new things from them and we should treasure the things we have now.
After chatting with the elderly, we sang some old songs to the elderly in the hall. They followed us to sing and clap. The atmosphere was joyful and full of the sounds of singing. Some of us played the guitar. Some of us played the piano. Some of us danced. The elderly were enjoyed this performance a lot!
Then, we distributed the gifts to the elderly. The gifts were hand-made scarfs and gloves. They were all made by our students in school. After the elderly received the gifts, they were touched. One of the elderly people cried because she could feel the love and care from us. When I looked at their smiles, I was warm and satisfied.
At four o’clock, they had tea time. During this period, we tidied their rooms. We were divided into three groups. Some of us were sweeping the floor. Some of us were makind their beds. And the others were cleaning the windows. We cooperated with each other. After half an hour, we finishedour tasks. The elderly felt surprised atour work. We were proud of ourselves!
At five o’clock, it was time to leave. Although we only had stayed there for three hours, we had a wonderful time with the elderly. We said “good-bye” to them and waved at them before we left.
It was an unforgettable and meaningful experience for me. “Helping people is the source of happiness.” We should help each other and care for the needy. I hope that I can help more people in the future.
