Carmel Secondary School held its 47th annual sports day on October 10. On that sunny, cloudless morning, Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground was filled with Carmel spirit.
On 10th October, Mr. Tang Chung Pui, the vice-principal, made the opening speech. He told us in his speech that female can make friends easily because they have a lot of common topics to cover. But for male, it is more difficult because they are usually not able to find too many topics to cover during conversation. Nevertheless, sports can always be a good topic among friends.
After the speech, the scouts performed the flag raising ceremony while the orchestra was playing the school song, and all teachers and students stood and sang it together.
Then all events started, such as long jump, high jump, running, shoot put, discus and so forth. All the students cheered for their own House. Some used the inflatable cheering sticks and some waved their House flags and banners. The cheering team cheered wildly and danced for their athletes. Every time when some athletes won, the students burst into roars of cheers.
Suddenly, it started to rain heavily. The Principal advised sincerely that all students that were weak should not enter the competition. He also led the students to pray and hoped the heavy rain would stop. But none of the athlete gave up.
Games continued on the second day which started with the inter-house 12 x 200m relay. It was the most exciting event. There were forty-eight athletes in total. Virtue House was the champion and Loyalty House came second.
After the inter-house 12 x 200m relay, it was the Parent-Child Brisk Walk/ Jog. The students held their parents’ hands and ran as fast as they could. All the cheering teams cheered for the parents and students.
Wong Pui Ling of 3C broke the school record in the Girl’s Grade B Long Jump. Her distance was 5.3 metres and she jumped really far.
The Guest of honour, Mr. Man Tse Fong told one should remain humble even if he won. He told them not to be just on-lookers but to participate actively. He presented the trophies and the Award for the Best Cheer went to Virtue House, which won the most prizes and the overall championship. In fact, Virtue House has been crowned champion for the last six years. The cheering team from Virtue House sang happily and all the members of Virtue House cheered happily.
The 47th Annual Sports Day ended perfectly and safely. It was a benchmark day, setting a wonderful standard for future school events.
