Carmel Secondary School held its 47th Annual Sports Days on October 10 and 12 in Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground. The sports events were divided into two days probably because of the great number of sports events.
On the first day, the normally quiet and peaceful Sports Ground was quickly filled with a symphony of noises. Students waved and hit their inflatable cheering sticks against each other noisily in the Spectators’ Stand and cheerleaders danced their routines vigorously to the loud music. Even the student helpers and teachers couldn’t help cheering for athletes of their own houses. Overall, the first day ended successfully excluding the heavy rain that fell during the 4x100m house-teacher relay.
Meanwhile, the second day was a bit lackluster for me personally due to the heavy rainfall. It rained all day, causing many important events to be either cancelled or postponed. A lot of students were quite upset about this, but thanks to the inspirational speech that the school principal, Mr. Kung Kam Tim gave, everyone’s spirits were lifted once again. At the end of the day, students, teachers and the scouts were all drenched in rainwater, but all had big smiles on their faces.
On these Sports Days, two school records were broken and both were by Wong Pui Ling from Loyalty House. She even broke her previous long jump record of 4.81m for an astonishing 5.46m. She also won three gold medals thus made her the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the Loyalty House. It was incredible.
The guest of honour was Mr. Man Tsz Fong, the school supervisor. He was invited to say a few words in the closing ceremony. He presented the awards to some of the houses and athletes that won in the competitions, including one for the overall champion to the Virtue House.
Lastly, I would like to say that these Sports Days taught us a very valuable lesson. Although the weather was not really good, the athletes did not quit, instead they continued running without fear of getting sick. That’s why I want to commend them for the fearless and dauntless behavior they have shown on those Sports Days. I hope in next year’s Sports Days, the weather can be a lot better than this year.
